My mission is to connect K-6 teachers with the books they need to teach, inform and delight their students. I was amazed when I looked back and added up the adult years I have been involved with children’s books: 25 years as an elementary school library media specialist, 2 years as a public children’s librarian, 8 years as a children’s bookseller. That’s 35 years! I don’t know if that makes me an expert or not, but it does make me knowledgeable.
I have come to the conclusion that there is a kid’s book for just about everything. Over the years the number of children’s books published has skyrocketed to 10,000 to 12,000 new titles yearly. Who can keep up with that? Certainly not classroom teachers whose plates are piled too high. I read thousands of new book reviews every year. I examine, read and evaluate those that promise to serve a purpose in the K-6 curriculum, as well as those that make great read-alouds, and those that appeal to kid’s reading interests. Please let me know if there are categories you would like me to include.
Since being laid off from my school library position, I find that I miss collaborating with teachers and connecting them with the resources they need, as much as I miss teaching and working with kids. Hopefully, this blog will be particularly helpful to teachers who no longer have the services of a qualified librarian and are always looking for titles which impact learning and foster a love of reading.
